If you ever wanted to know how blood clots, I am going to venture the explanation.Blood clotting is simply to formation of a patch of blood products that create a band aid for the body. The blood can clot by means on internal (INTRINSIC) and external (EXTRINSIC) process.

Internal: is the INTRINSIC pathway of clotting inside of the blood vessel External: also called the EXTRINSIC is outside of the blood vessel; tissue injury

The primary basis for injury is exposure of the collagen that is under the endothelial (basic surface cells) linings of vessels and tissues. Collagen is the major protein in the formation of bone, ligaments, tendons, and teeth. Furthermore it provides a higher tensile strength to blood vessels. The presence of collagen in the skin is what gives it its elasticity: wrinkles come from degradation of the collagen in the skin. The important concept here is not the eye or the skin; it is the vessels in the body.
A blood clot can form from having an infection in the body, slow and turbulent blood flow to a vessel, bacterial endotoxins, formation of atheriosclerotic plaque (pre-existing), or stagnation of blood flow in a heart chamber. Atheriosclerotic plaques can develop from elevated cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, genetic predisposition, trauma, or lack of mobility (exercise is key in helping prevent clot formation).

Clots that form in the arteries, under higher pressures, are composed of platelet clumps that are bound together by fibrin protein strands. Clots in veins, under lower pressures are composed predominantly of red blood cells with fewer platelets, and contain a large amount of fibrin strands that are intertwined.

As the injured area is exposed circulating platelets begin to clump together (aggregate) at the site of injury. These platelets then release what we can simplify as transmitters to summon more platelets. The unique event is that the platelets change their shape and structure to expose a special layer of PHOPHOLIPIDS. This exposure assists these proteins that require that particular surface. These proteins (coagulation factors) cascade together to form a mesh called FIBRIN (which holds platelets together in a clot)

As this cascade continues it becomes very complex in regards to combinations of the other proteins involved.

When a clot forms it is called a thrombus (an example is the Deep Vein Thrombosis; DVT). If this thrombus becomes dislodged and it flows through circulation it is now referred to as an embolism (and example is the Embolic Stroke). These clots once lodged inside of a vessel will cause a slowing of blood flow or an obstruction of blood flow. If blood is diminished then there is a lack of nutrient exchange. If the clot blocks blood flow completely death of cells and tissues is most likely to occur. If cells tissues begin to die, the organ that they are associated with will not function properly.

The manner in which blood blots form will dictate the preventative measures. Blood clots can form as a result of high levels of cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, surgery, trauma, autoimmune disorders, cardiac arrhythmias, pregnancy, and birth control pills. The list is probably endless, but prevention is paramount (aside from the unexpected)

Tips to reduce your chances of developing blood clots: Increasing mobility (improving circulation) Use of anti-clotting socks (like on long car and airplane rides) Stretching Improved diet with low fat and low cholesterol (aside from genetic disorders) Anti-Platelet drugs (another post will cover these) Electrocardiograms on a scheduled basis (monitor for arrhythmias) Exercise soon after surgery to mobilize blood flow Quitting smoking (no brainer)

Tips To Protect Your Health In Winter Weather

Protecting your health in the wintertime isn’t as hard as it sounds, here are some tips for preventing typical problems during the coldest time of the year.

Immune System

Prevention is really the key to not getting sick. Older folks, children and those with depressed immune systems may want to consider getting a flu shot, which can protect you from getting the flu. You can also improve your immune system by eating right and taking the proper vitamins and minerals for your age and body type. Also, use eye drops as needed to prevent and relieve dry eyes due to the dry heat that may be present indoors. Fitness

When exercising, shoveling snow or working outside in cold weather, take extra care to avoid overexertion. Overexertion during cold weather can put an extra strain on your heart. When you need to exercise, consider instead working out in your home or at a gym. It’s very important to keep up your fitness routine throughout the year, including winter.

Diabetes-An Epidemic?

Recently on ABC World News Charlie Gibson did a story that kind of surprised me. He announced to his audience that Diabetes has become an epidemic in the U.S.-NO ****!!

I am just one little diabetic that started a website to share my experiences with others and share that knowledge and in the process learn more about this terrible disease. I have been calling it an epidemic for a year now. It is so obvious. C’mon ABC tell us something we don’t know.

Diabetes is a disease that affects 7% or 21 Million Americans and claims 240 million victims worldwide. Type 2 Diabetes is the biggest portion of those at 95 %. Another 14 million Americans have pre-diabetes where their blood sugars are elevated but below Diabetic levels.
Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism–the way our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. Most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose, the form of sugar in the blood. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body.

For those who already have some risk factors such as a family history of it type 2 Diabetes is largely caused by elements in your lifestyle such as overeating and being overweight. Unless you have been hiding under a rock you already know that obesity in the U.S. is huge. GET THE CONNECTION? DUH!!

The story went on to tell us that the costs now in the U.S. are $116 billion for medical and an additional $58 billion in lost productivity due to absences from work. That’s a whopping $174 billion!! The U.S. alone spends $1 billion on diabetes research.

Whoa wait a minute-this news bulletin just in: DIABETES IS A WORLDWIDE EPIDEMIC.

In some countries, for example developing far eastern ones, Diabetes is growing much faster than it is in the U.S. largely due to western influences on diet. Folks all over are getting fat. Just got done ’skyping’ with a new friend in China who tells me 10% of the population has it. That’s worse than the U.S. at 7%.

I have this theory too that as we get more into the internet age we become more hooked on sitting on our butts surfing or working at our computers. This inactivity leads to diabetes as well. You want a story Charlie? Talk about that!

The ABC story went on to discuss how band surgery is becoming a preferred way to manage the problem. We don’t want to do the simple things like exercise and change our diet now do we? Let’s get some surgery. It is just another way to keep the economy going. Why change our lifestyle when we can have some surgery?
